Position Summary:

Independently or under minimum supervision provides close positive air control of all aircraft operating in PMRF airspace. (Must be certified in accordance with PMRFINST 3722.1 Series prior to controlling aircraft in PMRF airspace.) Will be an on sight representative of the Range Operations Supervisor, and report any required schedule changes for the crew assigned. Responsible for training T-3 Range Air Traffic Controllers (RATC).

Major Activities:

  • Provide close positive control of multiple aircraft through interpretation of radar data presented on analog and digital display devices.

  • Communicate with aircraft using proper radio transmission procedures and protocols.

  • Provide controlled aircraft with flight information necessary for them to accomplish their mission and avoid interfering with other aircraft operating in the area.

  • Ensures the crew coordinates all aircraft information for deconfliction is a timely manner to the RCC/AIC/ASTAC.

  • Knowledgeable and responsible for training T-3 Range Air Traffic Controllers (RATC) IAW with FAA 7110.65 series, PMRFINSTR 3710.13 ATC Tower/RFCO SOP, PMRFINSTR 3710.11 Air Ops Manual Chapter 3, PMRF approaches/departures/NAVAIDS (DOD FLIPS/TERMINAL), Aircraft Emergency procedures, and PMRF Range OPS Memo 03-90.

  • Knowledgeable in all the features of the Compunetix communications terminal, Navy Tactical Data System (NTDS), SPA 25 Indicator, and UPA 59 IFF interrogator.

  • Trains personnel IAW Range Ops training plan for T-3 Range Air Traffic Controllers (RATC), to include timelines and current status of RATCs to the Range Operations Supervisor and Air Controller Training Coordinator.

  • Maintain logs of all aircraft activity, target launches/recoveries to be submitted to the Range Operations Supervisor monthly as part of Range Operations CDRL’s. All data will be saved to a Share drive for future reference.

  • Prepares and submits monthly reports for the Surveillance section.

  • Creates remedial refresher training, safety sectional briefings, post mission sectional lessons learned and creates class rosters to document attendees.

  • Set-up, check-out, operate and monitor radar displays and other computer generated multi-sensor display systems in support of Range Operations. Responds to changing operational requirements when directed.

  • Maintain surveillance and notifies RCO of unidentified aircraft or vessels entering the operational areas.

  • Direct range aircraft and boats in the launch and recovery of targets and the recovery of targets/weapons.

  • Perform aerial target coordination tasks during RPV flights and aircraft coordination during remote site EW operations as required.

  • Notifies the Range Operations Supervisor of any anomalies, conflicts in schedules, or issues reported by the RCO for resolution.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Working Environment/Physical Activities:


  • General office environment with periodic assignments at remote sites.

Physical Activities:

  • Must be able to carry portable field radios into rough terrain areas for remote EW operations.

  • Minimum physical elements: to include walking, standing, sitting, and requiring repeated or frequent climbing. Lifting, pushing or pulling of 10-25 lbs. Customer contact, extended work day, and field assignment.



  • High School graduate or equivalen

  • Satisfactory completion of a Navy "A" School Air Traffic Controller (ATC) course or one of the following courses:

  • Navy Air Intercept Controller (AIC)

  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ATC School

  • Navy Air Direction Controller (ADC) Course

  • Equivalent Air Force Schools accepted.

  • May be substituted with ten years experience as Range Air Traffic Controller


  • Five years experience directly related in ATC field (Courses mentioned above).

Security Clearance:

  • Secret security clearance is required. Applicants selected either must currently possess a Secret clearance or will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain clearance prior to commencement of employment, and maintain a security clearance for access to classified information or Closed/Restricted Areas throughout duration of employment.
