Job Description:

Harris Corporation is seeking a Senior Scientist, Software Systems Engineer for environmental solutions programs. The Software Systems Engineer will work closely with a cross-discipline team (electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, simulation and modeling, and resiliency systems engineers and the chief system engineer) performing system level software requirements analysis, decomposition, flow-down, and management for space-borne environmental sensors and satellite ground systems that includes both embedded and application (including web-technologies) software. The Software Systems Engineer will be responsible for communication with Harris’ external customers and internal chief software engineers for the various components within the system and ensuring the system meets customer level requirements. The position provides critical support to our Fort Wayne, Rochester and Melbourne teams. Travel is estimated to be 10-20%.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Reporting software status and any technical issues to internal management and external customers

  • Working closely with the software Configuration Management and Quality Assurance teams

  • Enforcing and improving the program and company level software processes

  • Managing risk associated with the software and participating in program level risk management team

  • Creating and supporting trade studies in definition of the system solution

  • Participation in software reviews

  • Generation of requirements and interface specifications

  • Generation of sell-off artifacts showing the system meets software system requirements

  • Management and definition of software system technical performance measures

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field) with a minimum of 15 years of prior related experience or Graduate Degree (preferably in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field) with a minimum of 13 years of prior related experience; or equivalent.

  • 13 years experience in Software Systems requirements analysis, decomposition, flow-down, and management

  • 13 years experience in designing large software systems

  • 13 years experience writing and presenting technical information to customer and internal management audiences

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Leadership experience developing large software systems with varying software technologies used in payload and satellite ground systems

  • Knowledge of software development processes including Agile

  • Understanding of CMMI Level 3 software development processes

  • Familiarity with the Earned Value Management System and application of its metrics to manage cost, schedule, and explain variances in a large effort

  • Control account management experience

  • TS/SCI Clearance

  • Knowledge of object-oriented architectural styles and design patterns

  • Data modeling and design principles

  • System-level trade studies

  • Algorithm definition and development

  • Working knowledge of Model-Based Software/Systems Engineering

  • Experience with cyber security requirements

  • Background in image processing, remote sensing, and/or environmental processing

  • Comfortable presenting to large groups

  • Excellent 2-way communication skills (upward and downward)

  • Experience developing technical or cost proposals in a defense contracting environment
