Job Description:

Harris Corporation is currently seeking a senior technical engineer working within the Engineering organization supporting projects using VMware as a primary element. Candidate will generate VMware system designs, develop system implementation, and automation of administration of the virtual infrastructure on this and other various projects. The candidate must be comfortable in a large multi-OS environment (RedHat/Windows/*nix) and be responsive to all the needs of the organization. Candidate will be responsible for the documentation of each system, tool and process in order for systems to be repeatable, recoverable and submitted for configuration management.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensure the availability, scalability, security, and performance of the VMware ESXi environment

  • Develop and maintain system requirements, architecture, design and implementation documentation

  • Develop operational documentation and specifications on system builds, disaster recovery documentation, and standard operating procedures

  • Identification and resolution of service level problems and the identification and support of mission-critical tasks

  • Manage staff to Test and implement patches, extensions, and device drivers.

  • Coordinate with the Security Administrators and Systems Analysts to improve and maintain the technical standards of the environment

  • Manage staff to Troubleshoot and fix hardware and software problems as they occur

  • Manage staff to Troubleshoot and fix networking issues at the system level

  • Due to the high-availability nature of the environment the role will require after-hours and occasional weekend work to implement patches and/or perform system maintenance

  • Willingness to learn new technologies and bring new ideas to the group.

  • Must be able to work independently as well as function in a team environment

  • Commitment to continual improvement of the technical aspects of applications and operations.

  • Excellent communication skills, interacting with technical support groups, customer support centers, vendors, executives, and time management skills

  • Other duties as assigned


  • 10+ years’ experience with BS/BA (Bachelors) or equivalent

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with designing, building, and maintaining high-availability virtual environments

  • Strong understanding of ESXi, vCenter, HA, DRS, and EVC, NSX

  • Strong understanding of shared storage technologies including VSAN

  • Strong understanding of network technologies including Ethernet, and TCP/IP

  • Strong understanding of x86 based hardware and lights-out management

  • Ability to perform performance analysis to determine troubleshoot and isolate issues in a hyper-converged virtual environment

  • Ability to automate day-to-day tasks/activities using current technologies

  • Professional and diplomatic communication, verbal and written

  • Ability to partner with internal stakeholders to design operational solutions

  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and act on results

  • Goal oriented, forward thinker that can provide solutions for complex technical problems

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, while ensuring that commitments and timetables are met

  • A strong background in RedHat Linux and Microsoft Windows system administration
